HVAC Questions and Answers from Comfort Control Specialists

We get a lot of the same questions from homeowners and business owners throughout the area. Here are honest answers to the most common ones.

Emergency HVAC Questions

What should I do if my AC stops working in the middle of summer?

Call us. We offer emergency HVAC repair and aim to respond the same day whenever possible. In the meantime, close your blinds to keep the heat out, stay hydrated, and move to the coolest room in the house. If you have vulnerable family members at home, consider arranging a cooler place for them to stay while you wait.

My furnace stopped working overnight. What do I do?

Call us as soon as you can. We handle heating emergencies and will do our best to get there quickly. In the meantime, use extra blankets, close off unused rooms to retain warmth, and do not use gas stoves or generators to heat indoor spaces.

How quickly will someone actually come out?

For emergencies, we aim for same-day response whenever possible. Tim has gone out late at night and made long drives because a customer needed help. We will give you an honest answer about timing when you call.

Is it safe to run my AC if it is making a strange noise?

It depends on the noise. A mild hum is usually fine. Banging, grinding, screeching, or rattling sounds often mean something is wrong. Continuing to run the system could cause more damage. Shut it off and call us.

What is considered an HVAC emergency?

Any situation where your home or business cannot maintain a safe temperature, or when you notice burning odors, electrical smells, or visible problems with your system. If something feels wrong, it is worth a call.

AC Repair Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling my home?

Several things could cause this. A dirty air filter, low refrigerant, a frozen coil, or a failing compressor are common culprits. We will diagnose the problem accurately and give you a fair repair estimate.

My AC is freezing up. What does that mean?

A frozen AC unit usually indicates restricted airflow, often from a dirty filter, or low refrigerant. Turn the system off to let it thaw and call us so we can find the root cause.

How do I know if my AC needs refrigerant?

Signs include warm air from vents, ice forming on the unit, or unusually high energy bills. Only a certified technician can check and recharge refrigerants safely and legally. Call us and we will take a look.

Mini Split Questions

Do you repair mini splits?

Yes. We service mini splits and will give you a straight answer about whether a repair makes sense. The answer depends on the brand, the issue, and what the repair would cost compared to a replacement. Some mini splits are very much worth fixing. Others are not. We will tell you which situation you are in.

My mini split is showing an error code. What should I do?

Write down the code and call us. Error codes vary by brand and model, and some indicate simple issues while others point to something more significant. We can help diagnose it.

Are cheap mini splits worth repairing?

Sometimes and sometimes not. Parts availability is a real factor with off-brand units. We will assess the situation honestly and let you know whether a repair makes financial sense.

Geothermal Questions

What is a geothermal HVAC system?

A geothermal system uses the consistent temperature below the ground to help heat and cool your home. Since underground temperatures stay relatively stable year-round, geothermal systems can operate much more efficiently than traditional HVAC equipment while providing reliable comfort in every season.

Is my property a good candidate for geothermal?

Property size, soil conditions, available land, and your heating and cooling needs all play a role. During a consultation, we can evaluate your property and provide honest recommendations on whether geothermal is the right fit.

Is geothermal worth the cost?

Geothermal systems generally cost more upfront than traditional heating and cooling systems, but they can also deliver substantial long-term savings. Many homeowners see significantly lower utility bills and recover their investment over time through reduced energy costs, available tax incentives, and longer equipment life. While every property is different, geothermal systems often provide decades of efficient operation, making them one of the most cost-effective HVAC solutions over the life of the system. We’ll provide honest guidance and help you determine whether the numbers make sense for your home.

Furnace and Heating Questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Common causes include a dirty air filter, an issue with the igniter, or a problem with the heat exchanger. We will diagnose it and give you a straight answer.

How long do furnaces typically last?

Most furnaces last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If yours is getting close to that range and starting to cause problems, a replacement conversation may be worth having.

Is it normal for my furnace to smell when it first turns on in the fall?

A mild dusty smell at the start of the heating season is usually normal. A persistent burning smell or anything resembling gas is not normal and should be checked right away.

Maintenance Questions

How often should I change my air filter?

For many homes, changing your filter every few months is sufficient, but the right schedule depends on your system, pets, allergies, and overall usage. During routine maintenance visits, we’ll inspect your filter, replace it if needed, and help you determine the best replacement schedule for your home.

Can HVAC maintenance extend the life of my system?

Absolutely. Routine maintenance helps reduce strain on your equipment, improve efficiency, and catch small problems before they become major repairs. Industry estimates suggest HVAC systems can lose up to 5% of their efficiency annually without proper maintenance. By keeping your system clean, tuned, and operating as intended, you can help maximize performance, avoid unnecessary repairs, and get the most life out of your heating and cooling equipment.

Do you offer recurring maintenance plans?

Absolutely. Routine maintenance helps us catch small problems before they become major repairs. It’s much easier—and usually much less expensive—to replace a worn part during a maintenance visit than to deal with a complete system failure during an Oklahoma heat wave. Regular tune-ups help improve efficiency, extend equipment life, and give you peace of mind knowing your system is ready for the season ahead.
